CANYONS, PLATEAUS, MOUNTAINS, RIVERS & STREAMS, AND NATURAL ARCHES...Atop our mountains and plateaus, you can see for a hundred miles. Beautiful, clear running streams wind their way down past high mesas through entrenched canyons. Many of the area's mesa tops and canyons are filled with ruins of past cultures. And we have natural arches...lots of them!
ANASAZI / ANCESTRAL PUEBLOAN CULTURES...The Anasazi, or Ancestral Puebloans, appeared in this area about 1 AD. By 500 AD they had developed into a culture that built the earth-toned structures we see today. About 700 AD the Pueblo began to appear. The ground communities developed into multi-storied dwellings in many areas. Then about 1300 AD, they vanished. Who were they? Why didi they leave? What we know today comes from the remains of these dwellings, pottery and artifacts, and trading routes throughout the For Corners area. Countless questions remain unanswered as we visit these sites they left behind.
